Joan Benoit Samuelson ’79 On Hand as Kipchoge Runs World’s Fastest Marathon

(L. to r.) Joan Benoit Samuelson ’79, Eliud Kipchoge, Paula Radcliffe

Marathon matriarch Joan Benoit Samuelson ’79 was in Italy as history was made in the world of long distance running May 6, 2017. Her fellow Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge ran a marathon distance of 26.2 miles in 2:00:25, the fastest ever run. It is not an official world record, however, due to rules regarding pace-setting. The attempt was part of a Nike project called Breaking2.

Benoit Samuelson was at the finish line and quick to post the photo above to Instagram. Read more about it in The New York Times.
