The NCAA has tapped former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell ’54 to serve as an independent athletics integrity monitor for Penn State University’s athletic program.

In that role, Mitchell will oversee compliance with the school’s agreement with the NCAA and the Big Ten in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.

Mitchell previously was commissioned by Major League Baseball to investigate the use of performance-enhancing drugs in the sport, releasing The Mitchell Report in December 2007.
