Video: Brooks Rich ’03 on Artist Rockwell Kent and Bowdoin’s Kent Archives Archives

Brooks Rich ’03, who recently concluded his Dorothy J. del Bueno Curatorial Fellowship at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, curated the PMA’s current Rockwell Kent exhibition, which runs until July 29. Rockwell Kent-Voyager: An Artist’s Journey in Prints, Drawings, and Illustrated Books surveys Kent’s art from 1907 to the 1950s, and includes works that illuminate what some call a commitment to leftist politics from World War I through the McCarthy era. Visiting the William Wegman: Hello Nature exhibition at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art recently, Rich spoke with the Bowdoin Daily Sun about the show back in Philly.

Kent lived and painted on Monhegan Island for several years in the early part of the 20th century. The oil painting in the video is Kent’s Sun, Manana, Monhegan, painted in 1907. It was purchased by the Bowdoin College Museum of Art with anonymously donated funds. The Museum of Art has a number of works by Rockwell Kent; search the collections here.
