Joseph Sewall, of the Class of 1943, a former Republican president of the Maine Senate and prominent Old Town businessman, has died at the age of 89.
In 1983, when Sewall was awarded an honorary degree, his citation read, in part:
As president of one of the nation’s leading timber and woodland surveying and engineering companies, you have promoted the cause of conservation and land management. As a public servant in local government, in the Maine House of Representatives, and in the Maine Senate where for an unprecedented eight years you served as president, you have carried out your exacting duties and responsibilities in a spirit of fair play and firmness. Your career shows us what good citizenship can be.
