‘Elegant Manner, the Clarity and Order’ of Prof. Thomas Cornell’s Work Featured in Portland Exhibition (Maine Sunday Telegram)

A series of pencil and pastel drawings by Professor Thomas Cornell, Bowdoin’s Richard E. Steele Artist in Residence, is part of “Figurative Drawings,” an exhibition on display at the June Fitzpatrick Gallery at the Maine College of Art in Portland through July 16.

"The Birth of Nature and Death of Narcissus," Thomas Cornell, 2008, charcoal drawing on canvas.

In reviewing the show, Maine Sunday Telegram reviewer Philip Isaacson praises Cornell’s work:

“His elegant manner, the clarity and order of his work and the precision of his draftsmanship are embracingly classical, and tie him to Ingres and ultimately back to Poussin. Cornell’s subject matter can be sumptuous, but his translation is steadied by logic and, as I have said, order.”
