Saying Thank You and Goodbye, Brunswick Naval Air Station Officially Closes (Portland Press Herald)

Amid pomp and circumstance, the Brunswick Naval Air Station closed its 68-year chapter in the local community. In a disestablishment ceremony that served as a tribute to the area and its people, the American flag that was raised when the base opened on April 15, 1943, was lowered for the last time, as 87-year old Arnold Wilkie, one of the original sailors stationed here, watched along with about 1,000 people.
