Bowdoin’s Roger Howell Jr. Professor of History Allen Wells will discuss the political and class divisions in Guatemala in the talk, “From Guatemala to Guatepeor: A Nation’s Troubled Past” Sunday, June 26, 4-6 p.m. at the First Parish Church in Yarmouth, Maine.
All are welcome at this event, which is sponsored by the Casco Bay Friends of Safe Passage. Guests are invited to read the article “A Murder Foretold,” by David Grann, from The New Yorker magazine (April 4, 2011) as background for a group discussion.
Hanley Denning ’92 founded the non-profit Safe Passage in 1999 to educate children whose families earn their living picking through trash at the Guatemala City Dump. Hanley died tragically in a car accident in Guatemala in 2007, but Safe Passage continues her mission.
