Online Diary: Inside the Marriage of Sophia and Nathaniel Hawthorne (Morgan Library & Museum) Archives

The illustrious American novelist and short story writer Nathaniel Hawthorne, a member of the Class of 1825, together with his wife, Sofia, kept a diary chronicling intimate details of their life together.

They wrote of love, the robustness of spring – and sharing a watermelon with dinner guest Henry David Thoreau.

As part of the blog companion to its exhibition The Diary: Three Centuries of Private Lives, New York’s Morgan Library & Museum has excerpts from and images of several of the Hawthornes’s diaries.
