Mariya Ilyas ’13 ‘Bridging Cultures with Words’ (Times Record)

Sophomore Mariya Ilyas’ plans to organize a high school newspaper in Abbottabad, Pakistan, this summer were already in place when her birth city was thrust into international headlines as the place where terrorist leader Osama bin Laden was found and killed earlier this month.

“It adds another dimension to (the project),” Ilyas tells The Times Record. “The challenge it presents is how to combat impressions portrayed in the Western media.

Ilyas’ project was awarded $10,000 in funding from the Kathryn Wasserman Davis 100 Projects for Peace program.
