Anna Nutter ’12 Part of Freedom Riders Observance (Portland Press Herald)

Anna Nutter '12

History major Anna Nutter ’12 is along for the ride this week as 40 college students from around the country mark the 50th anniversary of the Freedom Rides.

Nutter and her fellow history students are spending 10 days on a bus as it follows the routes taken by civil rights activists who rode interstate buses in 1961 into then-segregated southern states to test the U.S. Supreme Court decision Boynton v. Virginia outlawing racial segregation in the restaurants and waiting rooms in terminals serving buses that crossed state lines.

The PBS show American Experience will retrace their ride along the historic routes, accompanied by several of the original riders and filmmaker Stanley Nelson, whose documentary Freedom Riders will premiere on American Experience at 9 p.m. May 16.
