Slideshow: Free Heels & Big Smiles; Yeah, It Was a Good Winter Archives

Photographer Brian Wedge ’97 captured some of the sweet turns and silly smiles of Bowdoin Outing Club telemark skiers late this season at Saddleback Mountain in Rangeley, Maine. Telemark is to skiing as fly-fishing is to angling, an older, more involved method that somehow seems a purer form. Practically, the greater range of motion afforded by telemark gear allows for easier backcountry travel. The BOC Telemark Program, which began in earnest with Andrew Graustein ’01 and TJ Fudge ’02, celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2011, and has welcomed back several former students as instructors, including Megan Hayes ’03, Frank Pizzo ’06, and Maya Jaafar ’07.
