She’s Back! Joan Benoit Samuelson ’79 to Run Boston Marathon (Boston Globe)

Joan Benoit '79 was a senior at the College when, wearing a Bowdoin singlet and a Red Sox cap, she crossed the finish line, winning the 1979 Boston Marathon in what was then a women's course-record of 2:35:15.

For the first time since 1993, marathon matriarch and College Trustee Joan Benoit Samuelson ’79 will run the Boston Marathon April 18.

“The passion is there to do it,” says Samuelson in the Boston Globe. “I thought I’d give it another go. I’m not getting any younger. I have X number of marathons left in me.”

Samuelson, 53, will start among the Elite Women, which will include more than 60 of the race’s top female marathoners.

The Olympic gold medalist, known around the world simply as Joanie, ran the Chicago Marathon last October in 2:47:50, setting a new 50+ record.

Hi Ms. Benoit – I am part of the Bowdoin family as my daughter Phoebe McCarthy is a senior. I am a marathon runner myself and have a small marathon gift business – my company is an official licensee of the BAA and I will have a booth at the Expo #2033. It would be a real honor to meet you so perhaps you could stop by my booth to say hi. I’ll be cheering you on during the race on MOnday.
    best regards,
    Charlotte McCarthy

She’s not the only Bowdoin representative this year in Boston. Although not as famous as Joanie, Women’s Ice Hockey Captain, Chelsea Young ’11 will be lacing them up after qualifying last fall at the Mt. Desert Island marathon in Bar Harbor. Go U Bears!!
