Sacrifices and Contributions: Maine’s Role in the Civil War

Undated portrait of Joshua Chamberlain, perhaps Maine's best-known Civil War hero, who also served as Bowdoin College President and Governor of Maine.

April 12, 2011, marks the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War.

Upon this sesquicentennial, State Historian Earle G. Shettleworth Jr. H’08 writes of the sacrifices and contributions Maine made in a war that would forever change the course of the state’s development in a piece for the Maine Sunday Telegram.

Down East magazine also weighs in on the “Fire of Patriotism” that burned in Maine, and of course mentions Joshua Chamberlain‘s heroic actions.
