Matt Nickel “˜07, a second-year graduate student at the University of Michigan’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, is a finalist in the 2011 Gerald D. Hines Student Design Competition, which this year challenges teams to create a plan for the best use of more than 30 acres around the Seattle Sound Transit system’s Mount Baker station.

“Entering the competition started out as a great opportunity to work with students from other disciplines outside of architecture and none of us expected how work intensive the first round would be,” says Nickel. Teams presents their designs in Seattle at the end of the month; the winning team takes home a $50,000 prize.
