Cornell University President David Skorton has committed to hiring 100 new humanities faculty over a decade, noting that eroding federal support for arts and humanities is pressuring universities to eliminate humanities offerings, particuarly in the languages. “If people want to restore civility to public life, then the values of the humanities need to be emphasized,” said Skorton, who plans to start a national campaign on behalf of the humanities.
