Sotheby’s to Auction ‘World’s Most Expensive Book’ – Bowdoin Owns One, Too (NY Times)

A copy of John James Audubon’s Birds of America is up for auction at Sotheby’s in London, and is expected to fetch $6-9 million.

Only about a hundred intact copies remain – and Bowdoin has one. Received in 1955 as a gift from Roscoe Hupper, of the Class of 1907, in memory of his mother, Mary Alden Hupper, it’s bound in four volumes and is on permanent display in the George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives, Hawthorne-Longfellow Library.
