During the evening rush hour on August 1, 2007, the Interstate 35W bridge in Minneapolis collapsed, killing 13 people and injuring 145. The National Transportation Safety Board cited a design flaw as the likely cause of the collapse. On Monday, Chris Messerly, of the Bowdoin Class of 1981 and lead attorney for a consortium of attorneys in the Twin Cities representing more than 100 clients, announced a settlement in the case.
Bowdoin does deserve some credit for this. My four years there instilled in me the value of public service. Having handled this case on a pro bono basis is a reflection on Bowdoin values. (I am glad my son, Ben (’11), is there to learn these same values.
