On Sunday, we reported that three Bowdoin grads would be ringing the NASDAQ opening bell on Monday, April 26. Little did we know that at the same time on the same day, another Bowdoin alumnus and trustee, Alvin Hall ’74, would be helping to ring the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). The occasion was to announce Financial Literacy Week and the NYSE’s Money Sense Web site designed to help average Americans gain a greater understanding of important financial information. Here’s a look at the opening bell ceremony (that’s Hall fourth from the left, wearing a bow tie).
So, here’s the question for Bowdoin history buffs: Is this the first time that Bowdoin alumni simultaneously participated in the opening bell ceremonies at both major U.S. stock exchanges?
